I have no doubt that many of you prayed throughout
our interim period that God would bring a leader, a Senior Pastor, to us.
You have prayed for the Pastor Search Committee that they would have wisdom
and insight as they worked diligently to find our new pastor. I know that
many of you have prayed for Norman, Bert, and I as we have continued to love,
pray, and minister among you. And now, brothers and sisters, I humbly ask
on behalf of our new pastor, Rev. Larry Bostian, that you give yourself to
prayer for his sake. The Apostle Paul himself needed prayer. In fact, he asked
for prayer on many occasions. In Eph. 6:19 he asks that the believers pray
"that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim
the mystery of the gospel..." and that he would "declare it boldly."
In Col. 4:2-4 Paul says, "Pray also for us, that God may open to us a
door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ... that I may make it
clear, which is how I ought to speak." In Rom. 15:31 Paul asks for prayer
that his "service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints."
And in 2 Thess. 3:1-2 Paul asks for prayer "that the word of the Lord
may speed ahead and be honored..." and that they "may be delivered
from wicked and evil men." These instances instruct us how we can pray
for our new pastor. Brothers and sisters, let's welcome Larry and Donna Bostian
with fervent prayer. Let's pray for him that he would be given boldness to
speak Christ's word, and that he would speak it with clarity. Let's pray for
him that the word of the Lord would speed ahead and be honored by and through
his ministry. And let's pray for him as the evil one will attempt to discourage
him and thwart his effectiveness. Join me in praying for our new pastor.

I
hope that the January devotional put out by the church helped with your daily
prayer time with the Lord. We didn’t want to leave you without any follow-up
so the church is now offering new devotionals that fit the needs of almost
every member of our church family. All the devotionals are published by LifeWay
Press and are distributed monthly. “Stand Firm: God’s challenge
for today’s man” is a Christian men’s devotional. It has
day-to-day devotionals that are written for men, about men and by men. It
also contains articles, updates on books and music and sometimes short stories.
“Journey: A woman’s guide to intimacy with God” is just
for women. Each day has scripture to focus on, a short vignette that adds
a personal touch to the scripture and there is “Step of Faith”
which helps you express your feelings about what you read. In addition, to
the devotionals there are tidbits of information, articles and “Café
Connection” which helps you connect with other women.
For the young children in your family
there is “More” which is geared to help the first and second grader
with their daily devotional time. It has daily scripture and explanations
of the scripture, along with fun facts, memory verses and activities. This
is a great way for your child to get in the habit of having time with the
Lord alone and/or with Mom and Dad. If you have younger children you can use
“More” with them. The next devotional is “Adventure: A kid’s
guide to time with God.” This is for children in the third and fourth
grade. It contains an “Adventure Calendar”, daily scripture, vignettes
about the scripture, a “Pray Venture”, “Brain Venture”,
a “Fact Venture” and fun games reviewing what they have learned.
“Bible Express: Embracing
the attitude of Jesus” is a daily devotional for the preteens. It is
for both boys and girls, but once you open it up, it is divided into one section
for boys and one section for girls. It has scripture, vignettes, exciting
facts, words of wisdom to live by and directions on how to share the Lord
with their friends. Lastly, there is “EC Magazine: Essential Connection”
for the teenager in high school. This daily devotional is in a magazine format
with daily scripture, a breakdown of the scripture, and personal teenage experiences.
It also asks thought provoking questions, includes areas to write prayers,
thoughts and question and covers how a teen can apply what they learn in their
daily lives. In addition, there is up-to-date information on music, books,
movies, etc… as well as interesting articles. I hope you and your family
will take advantage of these new publications Red Oak Baptist Church is now
offering. These are not only for individual use but you could use any of them
for family devotional time. It also makes meal time conversation very exciting
when everyone can discuss what their devotional was about on that particular
day. Just think if everyone in our church committed to reading their devotional
everyday it would give us something new to share about the Lord.
